Virginia State Route 205 is a road that goes from VA-3 at Purkins Corner, back to VA-3 in Oak Grove. It is mainly used for access to Colonial Beach.

The Route Path:

VA-205 starts at an intersection with VA-3 in Purkins Corner. The route goes northeast, intersecting US 301 a little over a mile later. The route continues east from US 301, passing through rural King George County, before intersecting the east end of VA-218. Immediately after the intersection, VA-205 enters Westmoreland County.

Shortly after entering the county, the route intersects SR-631, and curves to the northeast, towards the Potomac River. VA-205 runs close to the shore of the river, as it enters the town of Colonial Beach. The route passes by a residential part of the town, before reaching an intersection with its wye route. Mainline VA-205 goes on the southwest leg of the Y-Intersection.

The route continues southwest from the town, passing through the community of Monroe Hall, where James Monroe was born. VA-205 continues south, going through more of rural Westmoreland County. The route eventually intersects SR-631 again, before crossing Mattox Creek. VA-205 goes southeast from there, before reaching its eastern terminus at VA-3 in Oak Grove. The road itself continues south as SR-638.

The Route Path (VA-205Y):

VA-205Y is the wye route of VA-205 in Colonial Beach. The route goes east from the Y-Intersection, passing through town, and ending at a dead end right by the beach, looking at the Potomac River and Maryland.

My Experiences:

I have been on VA-205 and VA-205Y between the western VA-3 junction and the dead end to and from Colonial Beach. This was in 2021, before I started taking pictures. This was also my first time ever in Maryland, since the VA/MD border is the shoreline in Colonial Beach.

This trip was also the last time I left Virginia until May 18, 2023.
