January 1, 2023 - Trip to Hampton

This trip was my first of 2023, being on New Years Day. I got 283 photos on this trip, setting a record that would last until May 18, 2023. It would be a "preview" of the rest of the year in some ways.

Trip to Hampton - Part One

I left at around 10:10 AM, before taking my first picture of not only the trip, but of the whole year, at 10:16 AM. At 10:21, I took more pictures as I passed through Ruckersville, heading east. I took a break at my old house until around 11 AM, where I would take my first picture after the break at 11:08.

My first picture of 2023.

Back when US 33 through here was being upgraded,

My poor attempt at a picture of the road, maybe I should've turned the camera.

At 11:14 AM, I passed through the town of Gordonsville, where I took mostly bad pictures, mostly due to the sun glare. At 11:30 AM, I stopped at the Walmart in Zion Crossroads, where I bought some stuff. I would hit the road again at 12:14 PM, shortly before I merged onto I-64 Eastbound.

Approaching Gordonsville.

Right before the roundabout.

US 15 intersects VA-22 in Boswells Tavern.

I would continue to take pictures on the interstate, most of which turned out ok. At 12:48 PM, I reached I-295, which I merged onto, bypassing Richmond. I kept taking pictures, before reaching I-64 again at 1:08 PM. At 1:19, I passed Exit 214, where I finally entered unknown territory for my phototaking.

Approaching US 522.

I-295's exit for US 33 West.

Approaching Exit 205 on I-64 East.

Exit 214, for VA-155.

I passed the western VA-199 interchange at 1:33 PM, before passing Busch Gardens at 1:40. I entered the City of Newport News 3 minutes later, and entered the City of Hampton at 1:52 PM. At 1:55 PM, I took Exit 263 onto US 258/VA-134, and at 1:59 PM, I took my final picture of the trip. But the trip didn't end there.

Exit 247 for VA-143/238.

I-664 can also be used to go to Chesapeake, Suffolk, and the OBX in NC.

I left I-64 at this exit, and headed northbound.

Trip to Hampton - Part Two

Sometime in the evening (around 4:30 PM?), I left my destination, and headed back onto US 258. I didn't take any pictures in the trip back from Hampton, but I do remember some of the things that happened during this part.

Sometime later, likely around 6 PM, I stopped at the Sheetz off of I-295 Exit 38 (Pole Green Rd.). I most likely got back home around 7:30-8 PM.

After:

Despite only taking pictures on the first half of the trip, I broke my single-day photo record, taking 283 photos. If I took (bad, dark, nighttime) photos on the way back, I would likely have around 320 on this day.

This trip would be a preview of the rest of 2023, which was the best year in my roadgeeking/travelling career. The trip would be somewhat useless nowadays, since the relative I visited in Hampton has since moved to Georgia, which allowed me to take around 4800 photos from August 25-28, 2023.
