The Route Path:
VA-39 starts at the West Virginia state line, going east through some mountainous terrain. The route intersects SR-601, before going southeast, and passing through the small community of Mountain Grove. VA-39 goes through more mountainous terrain, eventually reaching Warm Springs, where the route intersects US 220, which VA-39 goes on a short concurrency with.
After the concurrency, VA-39 continues over more mountains, passing through the unincorporated community of Bath Alum, before going southeast towards Millboro Springs. At Millboro Springs, VA-39 intersects VA-42, as both routes continue east through eastern Bath County.
The routes enter Rockbridge County at Panther Gap, before entering Goshen. In Goshen, Truck ALT VA-39 splits from the main route, and VA-39 splits from VA-42 not long after. The route goes south, reuniting with the Truck ALT Route. VA-39 goes south, turning parallel to the Calfpasture River.
The route continues east from Goshen, going parallel with the Maury River, eventually reaching the southern terminus of VA-252. VA-39 goes to the south, through some hilly terrain. The route enters the Lexington area after some time, turning east, and going parallel to I-81. Not long after, VA-39 reaches its eastern end at US 11.
