Virginia State Route 5 is a road that goes from US 60 in Richmond to VA-143 in Williamsburg. It follows the James River for most of its route.

The Route Path:

VA-5 starts at an intersection with US 60 east of Downtown Richmond. The route almost immediately has a roundabout with Dock Street, and heads south before leaving the city. After leaving Richmond, the Virginia Capital Trail starts following VA-5, as they curve to the southeast at an intersection with Osborne Turnpike.

Not long after, the route intersects Laburnum Avenue, and goes over VA-895. VA-5 continues eastward past Varina, and has a cloverleaf interchange with I-295. The route heads through rural Eastern Henrico County, and intersects the west end of its concurrency with VA-156.

The routes continue eastward, and enter Charles City County. They eventually intersect VA-106, and VA-156 splits from VA-5 to continue southward with VA-106. VA-5 continues eastbound from that intersection, following the north side of the James River, still going parallel to the Virginia Capital Trail.

After a few miles, the route reaches the CDP of Charles City, and meets the south end of VA-155. VA-5 continues eastbound, going through more of rural Charles City County. A few miles later, the route passes south of the Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area, and crosses the Chickahominy River, entering James City County.

Shortly after entering the county, VA-5 turns at an intersection with SR-5000. The route passes through some suburban areas, before having an intersection with the west end of its concurrency with VA-199. VA-5 and VA-199 run along the Williamsburg city limits, before the routes meet the north end of VA-31, where VA-5 turns north past VA-31, entering the City of Williamsburg.

The route passes by the campus of William and Mary, before reaching Colonial Williamsburg. VA-5 turns south onto Boundary Street, before turning onto Francis Street, before turning onto its concurrency with VA-132 (Henry Street). VA-5 continues on Henry Street, before turning east onto Lafayette Street. The route passes over the Colonial Parkway, before turning north on its concurrency with US 60 (Page Street). After the north end of the concurrency, VA-5 continues north on Capitol Landing Road, before reaching its east end at VA-143.

My Experiences:

Every single time I have been in Colonial Williamsburg, I was likely on VA-5 for at least one block. I don't remember being on the route west of Williamsburg.
