The Route Path:
VA-287 starts at the VA/MD state line. The route heads south, gaining elevation as it curves a few times. After the curves, VA-287 straightens out, before entering the town of Lovettsville. Shortly after, the route reaches Town Square. VA-287 continues from the south end of the square, heading south, before leaving Lovettsville.
The route continues south from the town for a few miles, intersecting numerous secondary routes, before reaching the community of Wheatland. Here, VA-287 intersects VA-9. After the intersection, the route continues to head south. After around 3 miles, VA-287 reaches a diamond interchange with VA-7.
After the interchange, the route passes by Patrick Henry College, and becomes 4 lanes divided. Shortly after, VA-287 reaches a roundabout with Business VA-7, where the route meets its southern terminus.
