The Route Path:

VA-254 begins at an intersection with VA-42 in the unincorporated community of Buffalo Gap. Shortly after beginning, the route crosses the Buffalo Branch while curving southeast. VA-254 heads through very rural areas, slowly going away from the mountains before eventually crossing the Middle River and passing through the unincorporated community of West View.

After that, the route crosses Eidson Creek before eventually intersecting SR-708 while approaching the City of Staunton. Eventually after that, VA-254 reaches a diamond interchange with VA-262, and the route widens to 4 lanes for the interchange.

After the interchange, the route heads northeast as it enters Staunton, curving southeast as it approaches Downtown. Just as VA-254 reaches Downtown Staunton, it splits into two streets (Beverly Street & Frederick Street). Eventually, the streets reach US 11 Business and US 250 (Augusta Street), and VA-254 reunites as it joins the two routes on a concurrency. The routes turn onto Greenville Avenue at an intersection with the north end of VA-252, before US 250 splits from the concurrency.

VA-254 and US 11 Business continue northeast, before intersecting New Hope Road, where VA-254 splits from the concurrency and goes under US 11 and heads northeast again. From here, the route passes through rural eastern Staunton, eventually leaving the city and re-entering Augusta County as it passes over I-81.

VA-254 curves more northeast as it heads away from I-81, heading through a mix of fields and wooded areas, eventually reaching an intersection with the northern end of VA-262. Here, the route turns east, passing through the unincorporated community of Annex.

Following this, VA-254 crosses Christians Creek, eventually reaching an intersection with SR-608, which leads to Fishersville. At the intersection, the route begins to curve southeast towards Waynesboro, slowly heading further south. VA-254 continues passing through scenic areas of Augusta County with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, eventually entering the City of Waynesboro.

The route continues to head southward, passing through some residential areas, intersecting Hopeman Parkway. Just north of downtown, VA-254 turns southwest onto Poplar Avenue and crosses some railroad tracks shortly before reaching an intersection with US 250 (Broad Street). The route continues south for one more block before reaching its eastern end at an intersection with US 340 (Main Street) just west of Downtown Waynesboro.
