The Route Path:

VA-174 begins at an intersection with US 220 Business in the CDP of Collinsville. From here, the route heads northeast as Kings Mountain Road, climbing up a hill as it has an intersection with SR-609. After the intersection, VA-174 continues to climb the hill, passing a church before beginning to slowly climb down the hill after an intersection with SR-1118.

During this descent, the route widens into a 4-lane divided highway as it begins to curve east. Heading eastbound, VA-174 passes by Henry County Administration buildings, including the Sherrif's Office and the Henry County Courthouse. After passing by those buildings, the route begins to descend again as it starts curving southeast. Shortly after this, VA-174 has an intersection with the south end of VA-108 before curving due south.

From here, the route heads south, crossing Beaver Creek and having an intersection with SR-714, which connects to VA-371. Following the intersection, VA-174 continues as it runs almost parallel to Beaver Creek, having an intersection with Beaver Creek Drive before crossing Little Beaver Creek as it shrinks into a 4-lane undivided highway shortly before entering the City of Martinsville.

The route climbs and descends another hill, intersecting numerous city streets and passing by businesses and houses, eventually reaching an intersection with Stultz Road. After this intersection, VA-174 climbs yet another hill as a three-lane street, curving slightly southeast upon reaching the top. The route passes by more businesses, shortly before reaching its eastern end at an intersection with VA-457.
