March 18, 2023 - First Trip to Culpeper

This was my second (somewhat major) trip of 2023. It was also my first documented trip to go into Madison and Culpeper counties. I took 63 pictures on this road trip, and easily could have gone anywhere.

Part One - Charlottesville

This trip would begin at about 12:15 PM, with me taking my first picture at 12:18 PM (of some construction on US 33). I would sit at a red light to turn south onto US 29 until about 12:20 PM, where I took a picture of the distance sign.

My next picture wouldn't come until 5 minutes later, which was of the SR-763 turning signs. I would put the camera down again until 12:29 PM, where I took a picture of the SR-649 sign. Yet again, the camera would come down for another 5 minutes before I took a picture of "SR-631 - Rio Road - 1/2 MILE".

3 more minutes would pass between that and my next photo, which was of the overhead half a mile before the US 29/US 250 interchange. My next photo would be 1/4 mile later, of the second overhead for the interchange. At 12:39 PM, I took a picture of a ground sign for the US 250 Eastbound ramp. Less than a minute later, I took a picture of the first southbound reassurance shield for Business US 29, before going into the Barracks Road Shopping Center to shop.

Part Two - Madison & Culpeper

It wouldn't be until around 2:30 PM when I left the shopping center. My first picture of this part of the trip would be at 2:35 PM. I would then put the camera down another time for 5 minutes, before taking a picture of the northbound version of the "SR-613 - Rio Road - 1/2 MILE" sign.

The northbound half-mile sign for SR-631.

Unsurprisingly, it would be another 5 minutes before the next picture got taken. I took 3 pictures at 2:45 PM, all of which involved a "North US 29 - USE 2 LEFT LANES" sign. At 2:46 PM, I would take 2 more pictures, one of a "RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT" sign, and the northbound SR-649 sign.

US 29 shrinks from 6 lanes to 4 lanes after the SR-649 intersection, heading northbound.

Approaching the intersection.

My next picture wouldn't come until 2:52 PM, which was of the Ruckersville Water Tower. My next road picture though wouldn't come until 2:59 PM, which was of SR-1070 in Ruckersville. At 3:02 PM, I took a picture of a SR-609 sign, before taking a picture as I entered Madison County for the first time in 2023.

I would take a photo of the SR-621 sign a little too far from the actual sign, before taking a photo of a US 29 distance sign at 3:04 PM, a big 4-way intersection blinking sign at 3:05 PM, followed by a VA-230 sign at 3:07 PM, which was probably the best photo from this trip. I took 3 more photos of the US 29 multiplexes with VA-230/VA-231, before stopping at Yoder's just south of Madison at about 3:10 PM.

The only picture I have favorites for the trip, approaching VA-230.

Just after VA-230 leaves US 29 in favor of VA-231. The parking lot for Yoder's is behind the sign.

Unlike in Charlottesville, it wouldn't take as long to leave the store and get back on the road. I did so at about 3:25 PM, taking a picture of the only traffic light on VA-231 (northbound) at 3:26 PM. I then started to actually take photos regularly once I passed the south end of the Madison Bypass. At 3:29 PM, I intersected the north end of Business US 29, and took mostly pictures of secondary route turn signs.

VA-231 splits from US 29 with Business US 29 and heads into Madison.

Not the best range for this photo, but it's for the other end of Business US 29.

A very long photo I took for SR-607 north of Madison.

At 3:35 PM, I entered Culpeper County, taking a picture of its county line sign. At 3:40 PM, I reached my destination for the trip. Unfortunately, it wasn't downtown Culpeper, but it was the Ole Country Store. At 3:41 PM, I took my final photo before going in. On the way back, I stupidly decided not to take pictures on the way back for some reason. However, I did take one last photo for the day at 4:37 PM. That photo was of the US 33 distance sign just east of US 29.

This is likely approaching the Culpeper County line.

After:

I got 63 new photos to look at from this trip, and added Madison/Culpeper counties to my 2023 county map. As for the missed photos on the way back from Culpeper, I ended up getting those in my modern photo style on July 8, 2023, on my way back from Fredericksburg. I would end up taking 3 more trips to Culpeper, all of which in October 2023, giving me modern style photos through there.

Only the VA-230 approach photo made it to my favorites list, giving it an automatic slot in my personal "Best Photo of 2023" bracket. As of 3/13/24 (when I'm typing this), the photo is still in the final 1,522 photos.
