The Route Path:
VA-89 starts at an intersection with US 58/US 221 in the City of Galax, just north of downtown. From here, the route continues south into Downtown Galax as Main Street as it passes by numerous businesses. After going through downtown, VA-89 passes by Felts Park before crossing Chestnut Creek as it enters a small panhandle of the city.
In this panhandle, the route intersects the western terminus of VA-97, as it continues south and recrosses Chestnut Creek, getting more rural as it gets deeper into this part of Galax. Eventually, the route finally leaves the city and enters Grayson County.
Shortly after entering the county, VA-89 crosses Glady Fork twice as the route goes on a long straight stretch. During this stretch, VA-89 heads south through rolling hills for awhile, before curving southeast as it yet again crosses Glady Fork.
Eventually, the route reaches the Blue Ridge Parkway, where both routes intersect via an access road. Immediately after this, VA-89 crosses the West Fork Chestnut Creek and curves back south. The route climbs up a slope, before beginning a descent as the speed limit is 55/35 MPH (55 for 'normal' vehicles, 35 for trucks). During the descent, VA-89 reaches its southern end at the Virginia-North Carolina State Line and continues south as NC-89 to US 311 in Walnut Cove.
My Experiences:
I have never been on VA-89.
