Virginia State Route 231 goes from US 522 near Sperryville to VA-22 in Cismont.

The Route Path:
VA-231 starts at US 522 less than a mile east of Sperryville. The Route immediately heads south through rural Rappahannock County. Nothing much happens before the route enters Madison County.
Shortly after entering the county, VA-231 passes through the hamlet of Etlan. The route passes by mountains, until it reaches Banco, where it intersects SR-670. VA-231 runs through Madison County, before reaching Business US 29 in Madison.

VA-231 runs concurrent with South Business US 29 through Madison, until it joins US 29 south of the town. Once both routes reach VA-230, VA-231 turns east to go with East VA-230. Once they reach Pratts, VA-231 leaves the concurrency and heads south.
The route goes through more of rural Madison County, before reaching the hamlet of Rochelle. VA-231 stays east for a few miles, before crossing the Rapidan River into Orange County.
Shortly after, VA-231 meets VA-20 at a roundabout. VA-231 continues past the roundabout and heads through a small rural farm area, before going through Somerset.
Once it leaves Somerset, VA-231 heads for a small gap in the Southwest Mountains. After going through the Southwest Mountains, VA-231 reaches US 33. Less than 850 feet later, VA-231 and US 33 reach the Gordonsville Roundabout with US 15.
VA-231 leaves the concurrency and roundabout as it heads to the south. The route heads through the southern part of Gordonsville, before going past the Orange-Louisa-Albemarle County tripoint.
VA-231 goes through rural eastern Albemarle County, being a scenic road paralleling the Southwest Mountains. A few miles later, VA-231 passes through Cash Corner,.
And a few miles after that, VA-231 intersects SR-600, and enters Cismont. Just after the intersection, VA-231 meets its end at VA-22, which continues south towards US 250.
