VA-86

Virginia State Route 86 is a road that goes from US 29 Business/VA-413 near Downtown Danville to NC-86 at the Virginia/North Carolina State Line, also in Danville. The route is a northern extension of NC-86 into the City of Danville, and serves NC-bound traffic from parts of Danville.

Despite ending at US 29 BUS/VA-413, VA-86 is signed past its northern end to where Central Boulevard becomes Piney Forest Road, north of an interchange with Piedmont Drive. The unofficial northern end includes an "END" sign for the route.

The Route Path:

VA-86 starts at an interchange with US 29 Business and VA-413 in Danville, just west of the downtown part of the city. The route heads southeast as a 6-lane divided boulevard (Central Boulevard), intersecting Broad Street and curving south, before having an interchange with VA-293 (Main Street).

From here, VA-86 continues south, though now with 4 lanes instead of 6, having an intersection with Watson Street and becoming South Main Street. The route has its median removed before becoming a center-turning-lane as it crosses over some railroad tracks, heading away from Downtown Danville.

Not long after, VA-86 regains a median, heading slowly down a slope, crossing Pumpkin Creek before regaining elevation. After reaching the top of the hill, the route also reaches an interchange with Mainline US 29 and US 58. Just after the interchange, VA-86 continues to head south, before having an intersection with SR-737 immediately before reaching its southern terminus at the Virginia/North Carolina State Line. The road itself continues as NC-86, which continues south to US 501 in Chapel Hill, NC.

My Experiences:

I have never been on VA-86. However, I have passed under it on US 29/US 58 multiple times, most recently on August 25, 2023.
