August 1, 2024 - Sixth Blog Post

Welcome to the 6th edition of the Hunty Roads Monthly Blog. This is slightly better than last month's edition, with the revival of accompanying route posts, and more detailed sections.

There may be only one route post for this month's blog post, but it's a 100% increase from July 1st. That one route post is... VA-110! Yes, I know I said that 3 digit Primary Routes were ineligible to be released alongside a monthly blog post, but this was the route post that was closest to completion when it was time to decide on which one of the in-progress ones to publish.

Back to the contents inside this post, I've added a new section, which will also have its own page on this site. It's highly worth checking both the section and page (soon) out if you're interested in all the pictures I keep taking on all my travels.

July Travels:

Despite having an out-of-state road trip, this month was one of my most disappointing months this year. I started my month's travels on the 4th, going to my home county's 4th of July event with a couple of road pictures. However, that night would end up having wayyyy more pictures of fireworks than of any roads.

After this, I would take entirely non-road pictures until the 22nd, which is when I set off for my 2nd trip to Myrtle Beach, SC this year. On this trip back to the beach, I would take just 414 photos, mostly due to me already going through the entire route I took in the past (this trip from Short Pump all the way to Myrtle Beach was an exact repeat of 6/10), and me also cutting down on the amount of photos I take on trips (my phone storage literally got full towards the end of the 6/10 trip).

I wouldn't take very many road pictures on the vacation itself, a major contrast from my August 9-13, 2023 Ocean City, MD vacation. This is mostly because I spent about 65% of the days at my hotel/the beach, while on the previously mentioned trip, I was out of the hotel about 80% of the days. Most of my photos on these full days in Myrtle Beach would come on the 25th, when I went onto the beach to watch the sunrise. It was a decent sunrise, mostly cloudy, but I could still see the Sun trying to come out of the clouds for a few minutes.

Friday the 26th would roll around quite fast, where I stayed at my hotel's fine lazy river, literally soaking in every last moment I had left on the vacation, before taking my first picture on my way home at 1:16 PM. I took only 382 photos on this trip, despite the route having a minor change.

I also made the tough decision to cut my route short from using I-73/74/US 220 to US 29 on my way home to going through Bladen County to NC-87, following that to I-95, and eventually I-64 due to major rain and flooding in the state of NC. However, I did manage to cover a solo county donut in Bladen County, NC, entering the county for my first time ever on my way back home.

After the trip back home, I ended the month low again, with only two photos entirely. One of a bunch of my hats, and the other one of a sunset that I actually took today (I'm typing almost the entire blog post on the 31st).

July Routes & Pages:

Just like the previous month, July was a quiet month for publishing Route Posts and Pages. I did get more Route Posts published to the site than last month though, which are:

VA-406 (7/7)
VA-184 (7/7)

I also managed to get a Road Trip Page published this month as well:

I know I've said this for the past 2 months, but this time I truly mean it. The month of August will be a way better month for the website, with the topic below, plus the 1 year anniversaries of the 3 biggest Road Trips I've ever been on. The progress on the currently in-progress Route Posts has also gotten better. I am also finally gonna start creating my Special Pages for once this month.

On the other hand, one of my other major passions has been getting the spotlight more than ever, but it's likely gonna be awhile before that truly takes off.

2023 Photo Bracket:

Over the past few months, I've been putting together a massive bracket for me to decide what the best photo I took in 2023 was. As of right now, here is how I've got this 1024 photos bracket set up:

64 brackets, each with 16 photos.
I assign a number between 1-1024 to each photo based on when it was taken (lower the number, the earlier it was taken)
Then I go into a random number generator that chooses the 16 numbers for each bracket. (No repeat numbers.)
The order of selection from the generator is the seeding.
Once I get the photos lined up in the bracket, I begin choosing which one is better from those 16.
The ones I choose go into the Top 512, or the Top 8 in the mini-bracket.
That continues until I choose the best photo from that mini-bracket.
I repeat that until there are 64 photos remaining, which are the winners from each bracket.
From here, there are 4 brackets, each with 16 photos.
I repeat the process from the mini-brackets, until only 4 photos remain.
Those 4 photos get put into one bracket, with the seeding decided by the number generator.
I pick the two photos that reach the final round, then I choose the Best Photo of 2023.

Currently, I have 13 brackets completed out of the 64, with the numbers generated for 18 (including the 13 completed). By September, I should be nearing completion on at least the generating brackets part of this, with the final 64 decided by October. Finally, there should be a full winner by November at the latest.

Also, either when the final 64 is finally decided, or after the winner of it all gets chosen, I'll do a community voting bracket for all of y'all to decide what you think is the best photo I took in 2023.

Anyways, you can keep up with the bracket generation, and the bracket winners/losers on this page I'll created for this mega-bracketeering, the link will be added here upon release.

Monthly Road Trip %:

This version of the Monthly Road Trip % likely has the biggest change from the previous month. Just like July's tables, the top one has a list of potential destinations with their % chance that I go on that trip this year, and the bottom table has trips I've already taken with their previous chances.

The Next Post:

Depending on what happens this month, I may or may not have more sections for next month's blog post. This time, I'll actually have another Route Post released alongside the post.

Finally, for the monthly fun fact; I-581 in Roanoke will be renumbered as part of I-73 in the future.
