US 250

US Route 250 is a road that goes from US 6 in Sandusky, Ohio to US 360 in Richmond, Virginia. Since this is a Virginia-based website, this page will only have the eastern part of the route in Virginia.

The route east of Staunton mainly serves as a local route to I-64, while serving as the main route to Highland County and points west on the other side of Staunton.

The Route Path:

US 250 enters Virginia over Allegheny Mountain, heading southeast as it goes parallel to the state line. Shortly after, the route starts to descend down the mountains as a very curvy road, before eventually reaching the community of Hightown. There, US 250 intersects SR-640, before climbing up another mountain.

The route heads up some steep curves, before eventually going back down the other side of the mountain. After descending, US 250 enters the Town of Monterey, passing through the town and intersecting US 220.

Shortly after, the route leaves the town and curves to the south as it begins to pass through more mountains. Eventually, US 250 curves back east and reaches the community of McDowell. In the community, the route intersects SR-654 and SR-678, before yet again continuing east towards a mountain range.

In these mountains, US 250 intersects SR-614, before passing through the community of Head Waters. From here, the route heads southeast on a straight stretch before beginning a rapid ascent. Eventually, US 250 passes by Fort Edward Johnson and enters Augusta County.

The route begins its descent, still heading mostly southeast. Once this descent from the mountain range is over, US 250 curves a few times before reaching the community of West Augusta. Here, the route intersects SR-629 and aims northeast. Eventually, after passing through tons of wooded areas, US 250 curves southeast and leaves the George Washington National Forest. From here, the route passes through the unincorporated community of Lone Fountain, before reaching the CDP of Churchville.

In Churchville, US 250 intersects the west end of a concurrency with VA-42. The routes head southeast into the main part of the CDP, and VA-42 splits back off from US 250 here. After the concurrency, the route passes through the eastern part of Churchville, eventually leaving the CDP and continuing through part of rural Augusta County.

After a while, US 250 crosses the Middle River, still continuing southeast before intersecting SR-732. Shortly after, the route enters the City of Staunton and immediately widens to a 4-lane divided highway as it reaches a diamond interchange with VA-262. After the interchange, US 250 shrinks back to a 2-lane road and heads southeast through rural parts of the city.

The route passes by the Staunton Park neighborhood, before eventually turning south, right before turning back east as it approaches Downtown Staunton. Shortly after this, US 250 reaches an intersection with US 11 Business, turning south onto a concurrency with the business route into Downtown Staunton.

In the middle of the city, the routes intersect VA-254 before turning east at an intersection with the north end of VA-252. Right after this, the routes intersect Mainline US 11, and US 250 turns south onto the route before almost immediately, US 250 splits off from US 11 and heads east as a 4-lane undivided road before dividing.

The route intersects Slater Blvd, before curving southeast and passing by numerous businesses. Eventually, US 250 leaves Staunton and re-enters Augusta County as it reaches an interchange with I-81. After the interchange, the route heads east, before eventually entering the CDP of Fishersville.

In Fishersville, US 250 heads east, intersecting VA-358/SR-636, before curving southeast and intersecting SR-608 in the main part of the CDP. Right after that intersection, the route has an intersection with the north end of VA-285. A couple blocks later, US 250/US 340 Truck intersect VA-254, continuing east from the intersection. Eventually, the routes pass just north of the center of the city, before crossing the South River. Shortly after this, US 250/US 340 Truck curve southeast before re-uniting with US 340 Mainline. US 250 turns east onto the mainline US 340, before the latter splits off the concurrency less than 1,000 feet later.

US 250 continues east, before curving south as it approaches the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the route starts to ascend the mountains, it leaves the City of Waynesboro and re-enters Augusta County. Just after leaving the city, US 250 curves northeast, still climbing up the mountain, before curving directly south. After this, the routes have a north/eastbound only exit for Leonard Sandridge Road, followed by a diamond interchange exit for SR-654 (Barracks Road) as they head northeast. Just after the exit, US 250/US 29 enter the City of Charlottesville shortly before reaching an interchange with US 29 Business. At this interchange, US 29 splits from the concurrency, leaving US 250 heading east on the bypass.

Just east of the interchange, the route intersects Hydraulic Road/Rugby Road, with the former heading north before becoming SR-743. From here, US 250 curves southeast, having an exit for Dairy Road, eventually followed by an exit for Rugby Avenue, which leads to McIntire Park. Eventually, US 250 intersects SR-665 before re-entering Fluvanna County. The route doesn't do much in the county, with the only intersection of interest being with the east end of SR-653 right before entering Goochland County.

Shortly after entering Goochland County, US 250 passes through the community of Shannon Hill, where it intersects SR-605. My Experiences:

I have been on US 250 many times, with me being on a tiny part east of VA-262 in Staunton, everything from I-64 at Rockfish Gap to SR-799 in Fluvanna County, and from VA-288 to VA-157. It served a role in numerous trips of mine, including; December 10, 2022, December 5, 2023 and April 22, 2024.

Before 2022, I used to make frequent mini-trips to a destination along the route in Fluvanna County. Nowadays, I often find myself on some part of the Charlottesville Bypass part of US 250.
