May 1, 2024 - Third Blog Post

The third one, welcome in. Like last month, I've changed some stuff and added new ones. Obviously, I'm still playing around with the blog posts to see what is best.

Likely the biggest change on this third Blog Post is I decided to remove Mini-Posts from this edition, in favor of a major topic regarding the future of this website.

This month's route posts are I-495 and US 21. The I-495 post completes the 3-digit interstates and the second row of Interstates, while the US 21 post is the first post on the first row of US Routes.

April Travels:

Continuing on from last month, April was a pretty good month for me and my travels. I visited 10 counties, 3 cities, and Washington, DC this month, which also included me leaving Virginia for the first time since August 25, 2023. Included in the month was 2 road trips, the latter once again being my biggest one since 8/28/23, and being my 4th most photographed trip.

The travels started before the March Blog Post was even published. On the 1st, I set out west to Harrisonburg, taking 286 photos and visiting Harrisonburg for the first time since 2020/21. Not much travelling would happen for the next couple of weeks, but the 16th brought me 6 more photos as I went down into Albemarle County for the first time in the month (which likely broke the record for latest point I entered Albemarle County for the first time in a month).

The "drought" would end on April 21st, when I went back north, this time to Washington, DC, to see the last game in a 3 game series between the Houston Astros & Washington Nationals at Nationals Park (I'm an Astros fan!!). The Astros would get demolished in a 6-0 shutout for the Nationals, not the best game to be my first MLB game, but that's ball.

I-66 EB approaching US 29/VA-237.

Obviously, I would enter Washington, DC, marking the first time I left the Commonwealth since August last year. After the game, I would enter a tiny part of Maryland, marking my first time in another state for the year, and first time in Maryland since my Ocean City Trip from August 9-13, 2023. This would be my biggest trip since 8/28/23, as I took 1,006 photos, and hit my 20000th picture on my phone (includes non-road pictures) while at the stadium!

I-66 WB approaching VA-234.

The travels would continue the next day, as I took a trip to Palmyra (VA), clinching VA-53 in the process. I would take 470 photos on the day. On the 27th, I headed out east to Short Pump for the first time since October 2023, but I would only take about 20-25 photos, not enough for me to classify it as a Road Trip.

US 15 NB approaching VA-53.

On April 29th, I had to make one of the biggest decisions in my roadgeek career to date. This was to either stay home, and enjoy the good weather, which was the hottest of the year to date (89*F), OR go northwest up to Luray. I ultimately chose to stay home, and while the decision I made hasn't proven to be the good or bad one as of me typing this, it would throw my chances of visiting the town this year from what was going to be 30% for this post, down to 15%.

April Posts/Pages:

Just like March, I published 5 Route Posts for April, including the two that were released alongside last month's Blog Post. These range from US Routes with a one digit difference in their numbers, to state routes in the southern part of the state.

Somewhat unrelated to making route posts, this website had 1,196 views in the month of April. That's the 2nd most all time for views in a single month.

I-77 (4/1)
US 29 (4/1)
VA-125 (4/4)
US 219 (4/16)
VA-62 (4/24)

This also includes the following page:

And here's the updated posts:

Minor additions:

Expansion:

This is a topic I have had in my head since at least January, which is expansion. I am thinking of expanding Hunty Roads into the great state of North Carolina. If I do expand there, I have 2 main options, the first one is to create a separate site/blog with a different domain address, and change the settings to match the theme of this one. The other option is to pretty much add tons of NC content to this site (either separate pages, or additions to the existing ones), and add an NC shield alongside the VA one in the logo.

Even if I don't expand into NC, I've got an expansion ready for some route posts on this site. If you've seen posts for routes that end in Washington, DC, you may see that I've included that small part of those routes in the district. I've added DC parts to the other currently existing route posts that enter the nation's capital city.

Monthly Road Trip %:

Here's the May version of the chances I've got for going on certain road trips. I've added another table below with the trips I've been on this year, with the chances I had previously.

Next Post:

For the next post (6/1/24), I'll likely re-add Mini-Posts, and possibly add and remove some sections. I've got some big plans for the website not involving expansion too, those will likely get their own sections in June.

Just like the past two blog posts, here's another Virginia road-related fun fact to send this one off; I-95's southbound lanes between Templeton and Jarratt were formerly the northbound lanes for US 301 before the interstate got built.
